Kiki Swinson's novels crackle with breakneck triple-twists and no-limits characters. Now she shatters all expectations, as a young woman serving time must survive a prisoner-abuse conspiracy . . .

Trust no one
Misty Heiress killed her abusive boyfriend in self-defense. But in jail, violent female gangs paid off by her enemies keep her fearing for her life—and land her in the hospital. From there, a medical testing facility is her one dubious hope for some kind of safety.

Watch your back
But from the moment she hits the yard, she and other prisoners are victimized by illegal medical experiments. Injected with lethal diseases and made a test subject for experimental vaccines, she's clinging to determination by the slimmest thread—until she forms an alliance with a Corrections Officer.

Survive the night
Now she's got unexpected help—and thanks to the CO, a risky plan to escape. But her only way out means racking up bodies. And as lethal obstacles pile ever higher, she soon may not have any future to save.

"Swinson delivers another strong, fully dimensional lead character in Misty, who begins as an ordinary career woman and ends up in ever deeper trouble with each wrong choice."

In Swinson's third thriller, following The Black Market (2018), featuring Misty, a Virginia Beach pharmacy worker caught up in illegal drug dealings and the DEA, her determined protagonist learns firsthand about corruption and survival. She is definitely feeling remorse for the choices that landed her in prison, even though the murder she is charged with was committed in self-defense. She is attacked by associates of her outside enemies, and is subjected to assaults and abuse from medical staff who are conducting experiments on inmates. Between grueling interludes in solitary and in spite of the fact that everyone is living in fear, Misty is able to find a few allies, and she vows to help the other women inside if she is able to get out. Graphic descriptions of the horrors she endures vividly reveal her desperation and will to survive. Swinson, whose popularity is steadily growing, makes Misty a sympathetic character in an impossible situation, and the high suspense and theme of hope will keep readers reading and wondering how seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be overcome.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
